Evan Howard (keys, Aquafuture), Robin Anderson (drums, 11th House) and Dave Klemencic (also keys, LarJar) have formed a new trio dubbed The Air Circus. Playing a mix of originals and covers with segments of experimental improv, the dual keyboardists trade off roles of rhythm and lead and cover the bass on the organ and synthesizers. 70s soul-funk, rock and jazz, this team’s got a lot to offer!

The performance has been arranged for December 23, 2009 at 10:00pm at Cary Street Cafe and will include two sets each from Tiny Boxes and regular Wednesday night act LarJar.

Lozaga has been hard at work on his new project, Tiny Boxes, whose first recording efforts include members of Umphrey’s McGee and Derek Trucks Band. This marks their first foray into the community, with the band traveling from North Carolina and Cummins as a special guest in from Chicago. Their new sound is a funky mash-up that harkens to previous projects including Gongzilla, Lozaga’s solo work and the progressive sound of early Umphrey’s McGee.

LarJar is a keys-bass-drums trio that’s been performing a weekly Wednesday workout at Cary Street Cafe for over two years. They’ve hosted two LarJarFests, an independent jam-funk music festival outside Richmond, VA with a third in the works for this spring. LarJar features twin brothers Jason and Larry Alen Jarrell on bass and drums respectively and Dave Klemencic on organ, clavinet, synths and electric piano.

Cary Street Cafe has long been the home to Richmond’s jam/funk/rock community, hosting an eclectic variety of live music for the past 14 years. Their weekly routine includes free shows by the Former Champions every Tuesday, LarJar every Wednesday and a rotation of regional touring acts on Fridays and Saturdays.

This Friday, April 3 Grace Yoga will be hosting “Easy Alliances”, an exhibition of art created by Dave Decker and myself. The opening runs from 7-10, with live music by LarJar featuring Dave Decker will begin at 8 p.m. Dave’s work is incredible, and we’ve forged a friendship over the last ten years that’s included innumerable musical performance and art exhibition.

Grace Yoga is located at 209 N. Foushee Street between Grace and Broad, and is a part of the First Friday art walk. Deirdre Nivala has been instrumental in putting the show together, and has curated shows at Grace Yoga, Artemis Gallery and a number of other Richmond art spaces. Please try to make it out and check out a great cultural event in this up-and-coming location.

The video was shot and edited by Jason Werner of Accolade Music Productions and Richmond Engine #3. Big thanks!

In early November, members of Seven Pound Star organized a festival in the Elmont/Ashland area of Richmond. The event featured a sizeable stage and tent, bonfire and barbecue. A hundred or so people gathered as several Richmond bands performed. Seven Pound Star was joined by 11th House, Central Garage, El Plantanos and the Spaceheaters. Lasting from 3 till around midnight, it gave many of us a chance to get out and enjoy some fresh air before the real cold began.

If you visit the New Stuff! portion of the adjacent gallery, you can see a brief walk-through of how this image was created, from the initial sketch to the stars and highlights.
